Dr. Medley has had the pleasure of living in highly desirable locations compliments of the United States Air Force. From there, he had tours in RAF Bentwaters, England; Panama City, Florida; San Antonio, Texas (where he completed his oral surgery residency and medical degree); Ramstein AFB, Germany; and then back to San Antonio as a member of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery staff at Wilford Hall Medical Center, where he would remain for the rest of his 22-year military career.
He retired from the Air Force in 2007 as a full Colonel, Chairman of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Special Consultant to the Surgeon General. Shortly after retiring, he opened Alamo Heights Oral Surgery in March of 2007.
Dr. Medley and his wife of 40 years, Liz Ball Medley, have been active members of the San Antonio and Alamo Heights communities. Dr. Medley spent many years on the Terrell Hills Board of Adjustments, and is a member of the Conopus Club and the Town Club, as well as the Consejo organization. Alamo Heights Oral Surgery is proud and pleased to have Dr. John Hultquist as a member of our team!
Dr. Hultquist was a resident at Wilford Hall Medical Center serving under then Chairman of Oral Surgery, Dr. Medley. Because of their time together, Dr. Medley was very familiar with the way Dr. Hultquist interacted with patients. He knew that Dr. Hultquist would make a great member of the AHOMS team.
Dr. Hultquist spent years serving as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Air Force. He also was tapped for leadership roles: first as Commander of the Department of Orthopedics, and later as Chairman of the Oral Surgery Department at Wilford Hall Medical Center as well as Special Consultant to the Surgeon General.
Dr. Hultquist received multiple awards during his Air Force career: the Air Mobility Command Junior Dental Educator of the Year, twice the Air Mobility Command Dental Officer of the Year, the Air Force Commendation Medal, two Meritorious Service medals, and finally, at the time of his retirement, the prestigious Legion of Merit Award.
Following his retirement from the Air Force in 2017 after 22 years of service, Dr. Hultquist continued by serving veterans at the Audie Murphy Memorial Veteran’s Administration Hospital as the Chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department until joining

Vanessa is one of the pillars that supports the office and keeps it running smoothly. As a seasoned member of several dental office teams, Vanessa was the obvious choice when our longtime office manager, Julie Ball, retired. Vanessa files the insurance claims and makes sure that the financial side of the business is handled so that our doctors can focus on providing the best care possible.
Abby is the go-to front desk expert. She handles the schedule and manages the front in order for the patient to have the best experience at their appointment. She is ready to help wherever and with whatever is needed. She's fluent in both Spanish and English, so many patients reach out to her for questions - accounting or otherwise. Abby enjoys spending time helping others learn about the Bible and cuddling with her two-fur-babies Cotton and Sadie.
Estee is the newest member of our team, and her sunny disposition, people skills and work ethic have made her an indispensable part of the Alamo Heights Oral Surgery experience. She greets the patients with a smile as they check in, collects payment, and checks their insurance. She has two dogs at home that she takes care of at home named Nala and Simba.
If something needs to be done, chances are that Marisela has already taken care of it. Marisela joined us in the summer of 2020 following the retirement of her previous employer, with whom she spent 24 years. She fluent in Spanish and translates for our Spanish-speaking patients. She is especially good at taking care of our elderly patient thanks to years of experience working as a caregiver. She loves to travel with her husband, Victor.
Tracy worked with Dr. Medley for over ten years while at Wilford Hall Medical Center. When Dr. Medley retired from the Air Force and began planning his new office, Tracy was the first person he considered when picking a surgical assistant. When asked about Tracy’s best qualities, Dr. Medley replied that it would be hard to limit his comments to any one thing.
“She has so many. I don’t know if I would say it was her work ethic, her positive attitude, or her versatility. There are just so many things that she can do.”
Aileen started at Alamo Heights Oral Surgery as an unpaid intern gaining experience as a Dental Assistant. She was so good at what she did that Dr. Medley made the decision to hire her full time, and in the 11 years she has been with the office, we have never looked back. She has 3 children and is a beloved member of the team.
